Fury as BBC spends £89,000 to erect security screen in front of Broadcasting House statue by sculptor Eric Gill who admitted sexually abusing his two daughters and the family dog

BBC chiefs are planning to spend almost £90,000 on a protective screen for a statue by paedophile sculptor Eric Gill.

The move comes after his Prospero and Ariel sculpture, which is located outside Broadcasting House in central London, was attacked twice by protesters.

It was previously reported that planning permission had been sought for a permanent 13ft by 9ft glazed screen, and now the £89,000 cost has been released following a Freedom of Information request.

It shows the sum includes ‘fixings’, ‘licensing’, ‘scaffolding hire’ and ‘installation costs’.

Some £50,000 has already been spent on restoring the 1930s statue following the attacks.

Gill, who died in 1940, had been a celebrated 20th century artist – but when his diaries were published after his death, it was revealed he sexually abused his daughters.

Marilyn Hawes, chief executive of campaign group Freedom From Abuse, said: ‘It’s insane and outrageous. Of all organisations, BBC should throttle back given the association with Jimmy Savile.’

A BBC spokesman said: ‘The BBC in no way condones Gill’s abusive behaviour. Having sought expert advice and opinion, we are repairing the facade in line with the building’s Grade II-listed status.’
