While MPs are the public face of political parties the real power always resides in the background with shadowy figures pulling the strings behind the scenes. Few encapsulate this better in today’s politics than the Machiavellian Labour Director of Campaigns Morgan McSweeney, who has become an essential part of Sir Keir Starmer’s team, arguably more important than anyone in his Shadow Cabinet.
McSweeney has drawn comparisons with the Tory fixer Dougie Smith, one of the targets of Nadine Dorries in her new book on the downfall of Boris Johnson. Like Smith, some wonder whether Morgan McSweeney’s real role is greater than the job title on his desk.
McSweeney became Director of Campaigns after moving on from his previous Chief of Staff role, now controversially held by former senior civil servant Sue Gray.
He is often described as “the new Prince of Darkness” – a reference to the nickname given to Tony Blair’s chief henchman Lord Mandelson. But few really know what the man behind Keir Starmer’s election fortunes really believes or does.

The Tories are appalling under Cult-controlled unelected Sunak, but most people don’t realise the Cult-on-steroids that Starmer and his manipulative mob are waiting to impose
