Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah is killed in Israeli shelling on Lebanon border while six others are injured – and BBC says one of its reporters was ‘stopped and assaulted’ by Israeli police

A journalist has died covering clashes on the border of Israel and southern Lebanon, Reuters confirmed today.

Issam Abdallah was killed after an Israeli shell landed in a gathering of international journalists, leaving six others injured.

The shelling occurred during an exchange of fire along the Lebanon-Israel border between Israeli troops and members of Hezbollah.

We are deeply saddened to learn that our videographer, Issam Abdallah, has been killed,’ a Reuters statement read.

‘Issam was part of a Reuters crew in southern Lebanon who was providing a live signal. We are urgently seeking more information, working with authorities in the region, and supporting Issam’s family and colleagues.

‘Reuters journalists Thaer Al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh also sustained injuries and are seeking medical care. Our thoughts are with their families at this terrible time.’

Harrowing footage showed an unnamed female reporter injured by the blast as vehicles burned nearby.

Earlier today, the BBC reported that journalists covering the conflict were ‘assaulted and held at gunpoint after they were stopped by police in Tel Aviv’.

A group of journalists from different media outlets were near Alma al-Shaab close to the border with Israel when they were caught up in cross-border shelling, one of two wounded AFP correspondents said.
