Tesla costing £60,000 blocks busy A-road for 11 hours when it runs out of power in middle of highway

A £60,000 Tesla caused chaos on a busy A-road after it run out of power in the middle of a highway.

The electric car sparked delays for up to 11 hours after it failed and became stranded in the middle of the A36, near the Wiltshire and Hampshire border.

Locals have hit out at the ‘new technology’ as a team of workmen could not physically move the Tesla Model-3 Perform.

One social media user said ‘that, ladies and gentlemen, is our future. Are we sure we’re ready?’

The Tesla broke down on the road at 2pm yesterday – and could not be removed until 9.30pm.

Motorists using the busy road – which connects Salisbury to Southampton – faced delays for up to 11 hours.

A local pub landlord, Matt Grigg, said the obstruction caused a ‘stir’ because it caused delays for the rest of the day before it was eventually taken for charging.

He said: ‘It caused quite a stir because it is all very modern technology and it took up quite a lot of police time.

‘The police arrived at about two o’clock and they were there until nine-thirty.’

Mr Grigg, 57, said three police officers attended to the vehicle at different times throughout the day.

The car, a white Tesla Model-3 Perform, is a four-wheel drive with a starting cost of £57,000 and a battery life of 41 hours.

The Tesla can reach a top speed of 162.2 mph and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in as little as three seconds.

Mr Griggs said: ‘On Facebook, it’s just gone mad with comments and things.

‘It’s new technology. If it was a petrol car or diesel car it would have been moved – but they couldn’t move it.’

He added: ‘A number of local workmen along with the policeman attempted to push the car to safety, however despite their best efforts they could not move it.

‘The obstruction caused delays throughout the rest of the day.’

According to Mr Grigg, landlord of The Landford Poacher, Salisbury, the car failed even though the gauge showed several miles left.

He said the road was not clear of recovery vehicles until 11.15pm.

Facebook users slammed the technology of these cars in the comment section of a local news site.

Ben Sargeant, replied: ‘That, ladies and gentlemen, is our future. Are we sure we’re ready?’

Greg Hares added: ‘The future is overrated’.

And another user, John Ward, responded: ‘Welcome to the future of motoring in the UK.’
