Forest Green Rovers’ controversial eco-owner Dale Vince was today branded ‘an attention-seeking moron’ after he appointed a woman as interim manager only to replace her with a man just 14 days later.
Mr Vince, the wealthy backer of Just Stop Oil who has made the League Two side the only vegan football club in the world, has been accused of using Hannah Dingley as part of a ‘pointless PR exercise’.
Ms Dingley’s reign as the only female manager in England’s top four leagues is already coming to an end at the West Country club.
Vince has appointed Southampton Under-23 boss David Horseman as new head coach, sparking vitriol from some who believe her used Hannah just to promote him and his team.
Former Aston Villa and England striker Gabby Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT today: ‘He’s an attention-seeking moron. It was just a PR stunt. I wanted her to have at least 10 games. Give her a good go of it’.
Caretaker boss Dingley, who took charge earlier this month, will lead the League Two team in their pre-season games against Coventry and Everton U21s before handing the reins to Horseman and his assistant Louis Carey.
One critic said: ‘Hannah Dingley set to lose her job as caretaker manager of forest green? Nothing but a PR stunt from that numpty chairman’. Another said: ‘Made such a big thing about having a female In charge, and doesn’t have the opportunity to prove her worth ! Pointless PR exercise #disappointing’. A third tweeted sarcastically: ‘Not like Forest Green to perform a massive PR stunt’.
