A mother has been left reeling after being told her son had leukaemia and then – less than 24 hours later – being informed the boy was being taken out of her care.
The Perth mother saw her six-year-old son removed from her home after she sought a second opinion about her son’s cancer diagnosis.
The single mum-of-two described the situation as ‘a living nightmare’.
Michelle* first visited a GP in January after she learnt of blood in her son’s stool.
The mother was told to go to Perth Children’s Hospital and while there getting tests done she says she had an argumentative meeting with an oncologist.
Michelle told WA Today that when she asked for test results she was not given them and was only provided with a single treatment option.
‘I said I wanted a second opinion, I wanted to explore all my options and maybe take him home for a few days before he starts any treatment,’ she said.
Documents from the Department of Communities state the mother allowed both fluids and medications to be given to her son, however, she then requested she be able to take him home that night and return to hospital the following day for a bone marrow sample to be taken.
Perth Children’s Hospital would not allow it, as doctors said there was a high risk of sepsis if he contracted an infection outside of hospital.
