The incident unfolded just before 5 p.m. on May 1 in Lüdenscheid, a city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Police were alerted about a man who was injured at a bus station.
“A witness who heard shots in a pedestrian tunnel on Sauerfelder Strasse and then discovered a man lying on the ground called us,” a police spokesman told BILD.
The victim, 24, later succumbed to his injuries at hospital.
Officers initially arrested two teens in the vicinity, both of whom were also identified as Syrians.

However, they were later released after suspicions against them were found to be unsubstantiated, authorities said.
On Thursday evening, a Syrian national identified as Rodi C. turned himself in to police.
