Hundreds of residents threaten council with legal action over new low traffic scheme

Hundreds of residents have threatened to sue council chiefs for “forcing” a new low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) scheme upon them.

Five residents’ associations in the upmarket suburb of Dulwich Village, in south London, have told Southwark Council they are considering seeking a judicial review over the consultation process for the area’s sixth LTN.

Council chiefs are proposing to close a busy junction between Turney Road and Dulwich Village as it is the “safest, most accessible space for people walking and using mobility aids, and people cycling”. They add that it will “create more of a village feel”.

Blue badge holders and disabled motorists will not be exempted. LTNs contain roads closed off to traffic to allow cyclists and pedestrians to take priority. But critics say they increase congestion and pollution on boundary and main roads where traffic is diverted.
