Damning figures obtained by this paper expose how drivers have been left marooned in high-speed traffic for more than 12 times the roads’ quango’s target of 10 minutes.
Drivers were left waiting on motorways with no hard shoulder for 45 minutes or longer more than 100 times in the 12 months to Sep 2022.
All-lane-running (ALR) roads, where the hard shoulder is converted into a live lane, have come under continued scrutiny following a spate of deaths.
On Saturday, Sir Mike Penning, the former transport secretary, said “heads must roll” as he criticised National Highways’ “complete incompetence” at protecting members of the public.
