Rishi Sunak ‘has full confidence’ in Gavin Williamson as No10 insists it has a ‘zero tolerance’ attitude to bullying despite fresh claims that minister ‘raised details about MP’s private life in a bid to silence her while he was chief whip

Rishi Sunak stood by a bullying-claim minister today despite saying it was ‘not acceptable or right’ to send messages to a former colleague – as fresh allegations about his behaviour came to light.

The Prime Minister said he wanted an investigation into Sir Gavin Williamson to run its course before acting over ‘not acceptable’ messages he sent to a former colleague.

Mr Sunak brought Sir Gavin back into the Government when he became PM despite being warned that he was under investigation for allegedly targeting former chief whip Wendy Morton.

In a series of messages Sir Gavin, the former defence and education secretary lashed out at Ms Morton because he was not deemed an important enough figure to be invited to the Queen‘s funeral.

No10 insisted that it had ‘full confidence’ in Sir Gavin Williamson earlier and speaking at the Cop 27 conference in Egypt this afternoon Mr Sunak said: ‘There’s an independent complaints investigation that is happening and it’s right that we let that process run its course before passing judgement.

‘And I want to see the results of that, obviously, but I’ve been very clear that language is not right, it’s not acceptable.

‘And that’s why I welcome the fact that Gavin Williamson has expressed regret about that and now we wait to see what the investigation says.
