“Tootsie,” by David Yazbek with a script by Robert Horn, is musical comedy heaven. Tootsie is a well-made film with the impression of a predictable musical adaptation. Mr Horn’s novel is plenty of laughter, but when it attempts to point and laugh at the socio, cultural, and political time it is set, it becomes too sweet and dangerously offensive. It’s a crowd-pleasing comedy that enjoys mocking Broadway production theatre.

To say that the new Broadway musical Six The Musical Chicago and Tootsie is generating a lot of chatter would be an understatement. Based on the hit 1982 movie starring Dustin Hoffman, the show has been wowing audiences and critics alike with tight songwriting, high-energy performances, and timely humor.
In Tootsie, we follow Michael Dorsey (played by Andy Karl), an out-of-work actor who can’t seem to land a role due to his difficult personality. Desperate and at his wit’s end, he dresses up as a woman named Dorothy Michaels and lands a job on a daytime soap opera. Hilarity ensues as Michael/Dorothy struggles to keep up the act while also trying to win the love of his coworker Sydney (played by Lilli Cooper).
The standout performance in Tootsie has got to be Andy Karl as Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels. He pulls off both roles with ease, managing to be charming and funny as Dorothy while still retaining all of the characteristics that make Michael such an unsympathetic character. The rest of the cast is strong, too, with standouts being Santino Fontana as Michael’s brother Jeff and Reg Rogers as their agent George Fields.

“Tootsie” is modest, amusing, and softly regretful for existing among its gleaming patina of broadway musical tropes. Despite its flaws, the program is entertaining and very well to sustain itself, and innocuous only because it has the intelligence to say about gender & gender identification, even though both are fundamental to the storyline.
“I was a better guy with you as a woman than I ever was with a woman as a man,” Michael tells Julie at the end of the narrative, his deception exposed and his life in shambles. Hoffman is uncomfortably attempting to communicate the intricate enigma of what he’s learned as he says this line.
Tootsie Musical Songs:
The Broadway production of the 1982 movie Tootsie featured many memorable songs, including “What’s Gonna Happen”, “I Won’t Let You Down”, and the title song, “Tootsie”. Many of these songs were written by David Yazbek, who later won a Tony Award for his work on The Band’s Visit.
The musical comedy isn’t a snoozer; it’s more hilarious than the movie. While Yazbek’s jazzy soundtrack doesn’t match his artistry in “The Band’s Visit,” there are a few standout tracks. “Tootsie” will not leave you are whistling, but it will make you giggle, which is much better.
“Tootsie” is a bit of a mishmash. Despite the plot’s important role regarding gender, this very well, joyful and humorous musical comedy seems to have a confusing tone, disjointed visual and auditory sensibility, and almost nothing insightful to say regarding gender. Therefore, it has no coherent reality leaving a lot of circles unsquared.
