Joe Biden phoned the Broward County Schools school superintendent Friday night to praise her for imposing mask mandates in defiance of Governor Ron DeSantis’ (R) executive order banning them in the state.
According to the Miami Herald, Biden lauded interim superintendent Vickie Cartwright’s “leadership and courage to do the right thing for the health and well-being of their students, teachers, and schools.”
Biden added that he “stands ready to support their school districts and communities to get back to safe, full-time, in-person learning.”
This comes after Florida’s Department of Health threatened to withhold money from the Broward school district if they didn’t reverse course and allow parents to make these health decisions for their children.
“There is no room for error or leniency when it comes to ensuring compliance with policies that allow parents and guardians to make health and educational choices for their children,” Florida’s Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said in a letter to the district, adding that he’s “immediately initiating an investigation of noncompliance.”
“Joe Biden suggests that if you don’t do lockdown policies, then you should ‘get out of the way.’ But let me tell you this: If you’re coming after the rights of parents in Florida, I’m standing in your way. I’m not going to let you get away with it,” DeSantis said.
