With over 10 million people plunged into Tier 3 on Wednesday and a further eight areas entering the category on Saturday, 68% of England faces Christmas under the toughest Covid restrictions.
These measures are unnecessary and cruel, forcing 38 million people into complete and utter lockdown. With a Government completely unphased by subjecting its people to such draconian measures, is it any surprise 800,000 Britons have lost their jobs since the start of the pandemic? If we continue on this damaging trajectory, this figure will only worsen.
The new tiered system is lockdown in anything but name and just another nail in the coffin for the hospitality, travel, arts and retail sectors, who have all had the rug pulled from beneath them whilst preparing for the busiest time of the year.
The festive period is typically a joyous time for business owners, but this year, the 12 Days of Christmas have been replaced with The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Pubs are losing around 20 – 30% of their annual revenue, usually taken during the Christmas period. Hospitality will lose out on the £5 million usually spent during this time. The cancellation of pantomime productions alone could cost the economy nearly £63 million.
This loss of business is soul-destroying, but worst of all, is its impact on people. For the loss of countless jobs, livelihoods, freedoms and happiness amongst Britons, the UK Government is completely responsible.
