At least 12 pro-Iran militia members were killed overnight Wednesday in Israeli strikes in Syria, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

The Observatory further reported that many missiles hit their targets, including sites belonging to Assad regime forces, as multiple explosions were heard.

According to the Syrian army, eight soldiers were injured in two waves of attacks that also caused heavy damage, Hebrew-language outlet Walla News reported.

On Thursday morning, Syria announced that its air defense system had downed Israeli missiles over Damascus that were aimed at Iranian targets, Hebrew-language broadcaster Channel 12 reported.

Syrian state-television reported that the missiles were fired from the Golan Heights area and entered through the aerial space of Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed two mortar shells were fired on Wednesday night from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory. “As a result, an alert was activated in the Home Front Command app for open area only” in the Gaza border communities, the IDF said.

Earlier throughout Wednesday, numerous incendiary balloons were spotted in southern Israel, with one such balloon — suspected to be carrying an explosive device — spotted above a kindergarten, prompting the staff to rush the toddlers away from the object.

In response, the IDF attacked Hamas targets in the Palestinian enclave, among them underground infrastructures, Hebrew-language outlet Haaretzreported.’
